Senior Associate, Investments and Transactions

The Senior Associate, Investments & Transactions will work closely with UPMC Enterprises management on the evaluation, selection, structuring, and execution of early-stage and growth equity investments at UPMC Enterprises and will support transaction activity throughout UPMC as needed. This role will also include responsibilities in assisting the creation and launch of internally incubated startup companies at UPMC Enterprises as well as ongoing support for UPMC Enterprises management in their oversight of portfolio companies including, but not limited to, capital raises and investment exits.

Responsibilities:
  • Mentor, train, coach and develop junior resources.
  • Maintain awareness of market trends and analyze the effect of these trends on UPMC's current and potential investments.
  • Provide support as needed to UPMC Enterprises' executive management in their role of collaborating with portfolio company executive teams, including but not limited to, monitoring company performance, performing private company valuations, constructing forecasts, and drafting Board materials.
  • Develop assessment tools and create reports to executive management, the UPMC Enterprises Oversight Committee and the UPMC Board.
  • Write investment proposals and develop financial models including cap tables to be used with executive management.
  • Analyze and screen new opportunities.
  • Conduct primary research on niche industry sectors and companies and use said information to inform the business plan of potential and existing investments.
  • Summarize key transaction terms, diligence findings and recommendations in reports to management.
  • Partner with internal and external advisors on process management, structuring, negotiation and thorough investigation of tax, legal, human resources, technical and commercial risks.
  • Identify key risks and value drivers and perform appropriate risk and sensitivity analysis.
  • Perform due diligence on potential investments, focused on understanding all aspects of the operations and business model, finance and accounting and reducing same into a dynamic financial model.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in finance, economics, accounting, business or related major.
  • 5 years of relative experience 2 of which are in venture capital, private equity, investment banking, leveraged finance, corporate development, transaction advisory services, management consulting or related fields.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills:
    • Aptitude for communicating complex issues and influencing others
    • Executive presence
  • Strong quantitative, financial modeling and analytical skills
  • Thorough knowledge on valuation principles
  • Ability to apply quantitative analyses creatively and strategically to swiftly prioritize, identify issues, and produce key insights.
  • A high level of professional maturity (i.e., maintaining confidentiality to privileged information), strong interpersonal skills, and a solid work ethic.
  • Ability to work independently and as a part of an entrepreneurial team in a demanding environment.
  • Comfort with developing and articulating a point of view, but supporting a final decision made by the team.
  • CFA, MBA, CVA, ABV, CPA, JD a plus.
  • Healthcare experience is a plus.
  • Must possess intellectual curiosity in healthcare, technology, life sciences, and biotech.
