At UPMC Enterprises, the Director of Product Management holds a leading role for multiple products and for the Product Management team. Central to these company-building activities is the Product Management team. Our Product Managers bridge cross-functional disciplines, balancing business, technical and design constraints to bring products to market that will define the future of health care. Product Managers must feel comfortable working in a dynamic, sometimes ambiguous environments. They must leverage deep commercial expertise and critical thinking skills to distill the complexity inherent to health care's most confounding problems. They must also thoughtfully translate problems into solutions, that can take shape as disruptive businesses and ultimately, actionable product roadmaps. Product Managers move quickly and with confidence, always with an eye on the future. They must inspire teams to nurture creativity, and marry risk with reward, recognizing that they will be held accountable for the analysis, positioning, packaging and promotion of new companies. Given the dynamic nature of the work at UPMC Enterprises, responsibilities of an individual Product Manager may not fall squarely within de novo or acceleration roles and may intertwine and fluctuate between these areas.


  • Develops, shapes and continuously iterates on domain strategy to set the direction and roadmap for sub-domains, and aligns with cross-domain, Enterprises-wide efforts
  • Support domain talent recruitment and staff professional development
  • Exhibits excellent judgment on how to prioritize products based on changing business needs
  • Owner of portfolio of products within domain
  • Reports on progress and success of entire product portfolio for areas of responsibility
  • Helps build a collaborative team culture and ensures knowledge sharing
  • Seeks opportunities to implement process improvements that optimize team operations
  • Participate in deal flow meetings and support with ad hoc company valuation analyses, and industry / competitive landscape evaluation
  • Drives a culture within cross-functional team to create action and inspire innovation
  • Drives end-to-end evaluation process of internal and external opportunities from inception through final investment decision and transaction, including contribution and supervision over the following:Initial opportunity screening for strategic fit, to justify due diligenceInitial business due diligence through primary and secondary market research, SME interviews to size market, segment market, identify and benchmark offering with competing solution providers Subsequent detailed business case and value proposition, with collaboration with SMEs on product team (design, engineering) and in the provider / health plan to help complete due diligenceSynthesis of above into Enterprise investment / partnership on solution co-development recommendations to Executive leadership
  • Synthesizes and communicates portfolio level strategy to Product Managers
  • Directs team output and deliverables as needed for presentation to team and leadership
  • Leads strategy for product portfolio within areas of responsibility
  • Directs and mentors direct reports, including analysts, designers, product managers and other team members as needed, building business and relationship management skillsets
  • Participates in leadership meetings to provide expertise in functional area and communicate company strategy to staff
  • Drives product management efforts on all products within the domain
  • Acts as primary subject matter expert in functional area for internal and external users
  • Accountable for success of products within area of responsibilityAccountable to timeline and budget for all products within areas of responsibility
  • Provide ad hoc company and industry analyses and quarterly/annual performance reporting


  • Bachelors Degree, Advanced degree, MBA, MS or PhD preferred
  • 8+ years prior experience in product management with multiple product responsibility required, preferably in a technology industry
  • 3+ years of experience developing product roadmaps and delivery of corresponding product plans required, preferably following an Agile and iterative product development processes and methodology
  • 3+ years of experience leading teams, including development and performance management required
  • Healthcare experience preferred
  • Success in delivering products from concept through launch
  • Ability to effectively influence multiple teams to drive internal consensus and common goals
  • Proven creative problem solving and innovative mindset
  • Self-motivated worker with entrepreneurial passion and ability to effectively multi-task
  • Ability to travel as needed
