Manager Portfolio Development, Translational Science

At UPMC Enterprises, Translational Science, the Manager will work closely with the Director/VP in the respective strategic area to evaluate, perform diligence and, when necessary, develop a business-case for project proposals to support investment decision-making. For funded proposals, they will work with both internal and external team members to generate detailed project plans, timelines and budgets to maximize the probability of success in translating scientific discoveries into a commercial product for approval, licensing or acquisition. When the proposal necessitates the formation of a new company, this individual will also be responsible for managing the business-related startup activities until the company is fully operational at which time, they will transition the external responsibilities.


  • Contribute to ideation phase of projects by:
    • Gathering key secondary research (scientific literature reviews, market landscape reports, database data pulling)
    • Participating with Director in primary research (interviews with UPMC SME’s or external experts)
    • Analyzing research collected and supporting Director with market landscape and business case development
  • Contribute to implementation phase of projects by:
    • Tracking progress of project plans and managing day-to-day interactions with vendors
    • Coordinating meetings with scientific investigators for proposal discussions, seminars, progress check-ins, etc.
    • Updating market landscapes to inform project commercialization strategy
    • Escalating issues as appropriate to Director
  • Contribute to Portfolio development organization initiatives:
    • Conducts vendor research with guidance from Director and/or VP, Portfolio Development
    • Brings forward ideas to improve execution and efficiencies
    • Creation of portfolio management tools including dashboard and analytics that allow for rapid assessment of project status.
  • Support the broader Translational Sciences team with tasks on an ad-hoc basis.


-Bachelor's degree required, life sciences field preferred. MS, MBA, or PhD preferred

-PMP certification preferred

-4 years of relevant professional experience in venture capital, business development, and/or strategy required.

-Advanced degrees will be considered in lieu of experience.

-1 year of experience in managing life science projects with demonstrated history of success preferred

-Demonstrated experience managing in a cross-functional matrix preferred

-Demonstrated history of management, project planning and reporting, problem solving, organizational, and negotiation skills preferred

-Demonstrated ability to communicate (both in writing and orally) complicated scientific or medical information to a broad audience including C-Level executives preferred

-Knowledge and experience in pharmaceuticals, diagnostics or device development processes, lifecycles, and best practices preferred
