Job Purpose

The Senior Director will work closely with Translational Science leadership to implement the team’s investment strategy by helping to identify, evaluate, and develop a business case for relevant internal and external investment opportunities. In this role the Director will lead project-focused teams to conduct in-depth scientific, commercial and financial due diligence to support investment decisions. For active investments, the director will work with both internal and external team members to generate detailed project plans, timelines and budgets to maximize the probability of success in translating scientific discoveries into a commercial product for approval, licensing or acquisition. For investment opportunities that require company formation, the Director will also manage and oversee the business-related startup activities, including the management of internal and external stakeholders contributing to the success implementation of the business plan. It is anticipated that the Director may assume this leading role until the company is fully operational at which time they will transition responsibilities to the management team.
A Senior Director is expected to operate with a high level of independence, taking responsibility for multiple projects in various stages of development. Beyond project specific assignments the Senior Director is expected to bring to bear his experience, business acumen and vision to help shape the investment strategy for the Translational Science team and support team development.


Responsibilities



• Actively participates in team-wide efforts to define and refine strategic investment focus areas
o Evaluate and provide insight into relevant market trends (existing and new markets, technologies, products and companies)
o Develop initial investment hypotheses for discussion with senior leadership
o Ensure proper education of senior leadership on external landscape and opportunities
• Collaborates effectively with Translational Science leadership to translate overall strategy into highly aligned investment and commercial efforts
• Leads Translational Science market research, product/company development and investment-related activities day-to-day
o Reviews proposals, performs landscape analysis and oversees diligence for internal and external funding requests and investment opportunities
o Supported by business analysts and advisors conducts high quality market research and financial analysis to build a strong business case supporting relevant investment and commercial recommendations
o Makes recommendations for funding project/investment proposals to Translational Science executive leadership and writes investment memos
o Independently develops timelines, budget and risk mitigation strategies
• For internal development programs
o Works with Translational Science and ITTC leadership to manage the pipeline of internal development programs and associated project prioritization, planning and management
o For funded projects works with investigators and external consultants and advisors to develop pragmatic and goal-oriented development plans to support staged technology validation and product development, including potential company formation
• Leads related investment, contract and partnership negotiations, drawing as appropriate on relevant functional expertise (scientific, medical, technical, commercial, financial, legal, regulatory, etc.) at ITTC and UPMC Enterprises and Translational Science
• Establishes collaborative and effective relationships with key internal and external stakeholders:
o Academic investigators and entrepreneurs at UPMC/Pitt and beyond
o External scientific and business advisors to the Translational Science team
o Investors for collaborative assessment of deal flow and syndication opportunities
o Executives and functional management of potential corporate partners
• Assesses and develops Translational Science team’s capabilities
o Identifies and mobilizes internal and external resources, including consultants and CRO’s, to provide complementary expertise and resources.
o As needed supports the recruitment of new ITTC/Translational Science team members.
• Supports a team environment, including building collaborative relationships, training reports and peers to perform at maximum efficiency and building cross-functional coalitions to ensure knowledge is shared across teams
• Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors and UPMC Enterprise values
• Performs other duties as assigned




 


Qualifications

• 8-10 years of relevant professional experience in the life sciences or healthcare industry with demonstrated history of success
• The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in roles of increasing responsibility in life science investment banking, consulting or venture capital
• Bachelor's degree required, life sciences or healthcare field preferred
• Post-graduate training including MS/MBA PhD or MD preferred
• The ideal candidate has relevant scientific and/or business experience exploring problems in any or all the following areas:
o Biopharmaceuticals and biotechnology
o Diagnostics
o Medical devices
o Health IT and data science
• The successful candidate should have the demonstrated ability to independently tackle complex scientific and business problems
o Demonstrated history of team management, project planning and reporting
o Excellent problem solving, organizational, and negotiation skills
o Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively (both in writing and orally) scientific, medical and business information to a broad audience including scientific experts, business professionals and C-Level executives
• We are looking for candidates with a successful track record of working in and managing small cross-functional teams, having demonstrated the capacity to effectively manage upward and downward to achieve critical project goals
• The ideal candidate is a self-starter, highly motivated and willing to go the extra mile to support the vision of enabling Life Changing Medicine
• Flexibility for travel as needed (up to ~30%)
