Mgr Translational Science

Purpose:
At UPMC Enterprises, Translational Science, the Manager will work closely with the Director/VP in the respective strategic area to evaluate, perform diligence and, when necessary, develop a business-case for project proposals to support investment decision-making. For funded proposals, they will work with both internal and external team members to generate detailed project plans, timelines and budgets to maximize the probability of success in translating scientific discoveries into a commercial product for approval, licensing or acquisition. When the proposal necessitates the formation of a new company, this individual will also be responsible for managing the business-related startup activities until the company is fully operational at which time, they will transition the external responsibilities.

Responsibilities:

    • Performs responsibilities for projects with periodic input of senior team members

    • Manage multiple projects and timelines related to internal product development and portfolio company-related requirements.  
    • Lead cross-functional teams with engineers, designers, product analysts, quality analysts, clinicians, and others as needed 
    • Responsible for developing, defining, monitoring, executing, and adhering to project plans, schedules, budgets, and deliverables. Drive the successful estimation, planning, and execution of high quality software product development projects on budget and on time 
    • Work with Development and Product Management Teams on a daily basis providing status updates, recommendations for improvements, and other inputs to provide a world class engineering development organization 
    • Proficient in data access, manipulation and analysis. Fluent in at least one stats package and basic programming language.
    • Communicate activities, statuses, accomplishments with senior management
    • Develops timelines and budget and identifies key areas of risk

    • Generates development plan and risk mitigation in conjunction with senior team members

    • Manages internal, external, and senior management stakeholders with regular assistance of senior team members

    • Assists senior team members with preparation for stakeholder updates and presentations

    • Assesses the team’s capabilities and recruits internal and external resources, including consultants, to provide complementary expertise and resources

    • Supports a team environment, including building collaborative relationships, training peers to perform at maximum efficiency and building cross-functional coalitions to ensure knowledge is shared across teams

    • Develops key metrics to measure project/company performance and communicates to the Translational Science staff regularly

    • Participate in defining and implementing the process roadmap and project management best practices to boost productivity, quality and efficiency 
    • Maintains current industry knowledge and trends, attending educational events and participates in committee work as appropriate 

    • Accountable for maintaining project records in accordance with standard practices

    • Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies and behaviors

    • Performs other duties as assigned

 

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree required, life sciences field preferred. MS, MBA or PhD preferred. PMP certification preferred. 1 year of experience in managing life science projects with demonstrated history of success. Demonstrated experience managing in a cross-functional matrix. Demonstrated history of management, project planning and reporting, problem solving, organizational, and negotiation skills. Demonstrated ability to communicate (both in writing and orally) complicated scientific or medical information to a broad audience including C-Level executives. Knowledge and experience in pharmaceuticals, diagnostics or device development processes, lifecycles, and best practices. Bachelor's degree required, life sciences field preferred. MS, MBA or PhD preferred. PMP certification preferred. 4 years of relevant professional experience in venture capital, business development, and/or strategy required. Advanced degrees will be considered in lieu of experience.1 year of experience in managing life science projects with demonstrated history of success preferred Demonstrated experience managing in a cross-functional matrix. Demonstrated history of management, project planning and reporting, problem solving, organizational, and negotiation skills. Demonstrated ability to communicate (both in writing and orally) complicated scientific or medical information to a broad audience including C-Level executives.
