The goal of UPMC Rx Express is to take the hassle out of starting prescribed treatment and deliver the best patient experience in order to promote long-term adherence and better health outcomes.  To achieve this goal, we’re building a new type of pharmacy that proactively engages patients when new prescriptions are ordered and provides automated check-ins and refill reminders to keep patients on the road to recovery.  The product team is leveraging chatbots and other digital support tools to make our service both delightful to use and scalable to over 3 million UPMC patients.

The Rx Express team is looking for a Senior Software Engineer to help define and lead development of new capabilities as we expand our service. The focus of this position will be to both reach a mastery level of the technology stack and mentor less experienced team members.  If you’re a self-starter that wants to move fast, and ‘learn by shipping’, you’ll find the perfect environment to apply your expertise. 
  • Application Development Cycle - Demonstrate the understanding of multiple SDLCs.
  • Communication - Responsible for demonstrating appropriate, clear, concise, and effective written and oral communications in all interactions to build relationships and accomplish day to day work and projects.
  • Design - Implement the overall system design. Exhibit awareness of user experience standards.
  • Documentation - Create detail-oriented documentation that outlines new and moderately complex processes. Responsible for quality and validity of documentation.
  • Integration - Responsible for more complex integration between modules and services.
  • Interactions with Others - Successfully completes projects, tasks, and initiatives by embracing a team-first approach. Works in collaboration with team and offers feedback, where appropriate, to complete individual and group efforts. Shows the ability to adjust and be flexible to change by adapting approach when necessary. Mentors less experienced staff.
  • Project Management - Has ownership in success of projects. Responsible for estimating and delivering on individual task within project. Shows the ability to be responsible for project timelines.
  • Quality - Demonstrate the ability to conduct code review of others and fully embrace test-driven development and continuous integration / continuous deployment best-practices.
  • Security - Validate and review secure processes and protocols. Ensure that processes/protocols are followed by junior level staff.
  • Self-Development - Responsible for continuous self-study, trainings, partnering with more senior members of team, and/or seeking out opportunities to broaden scope to stay up to date with industry and organizational trends. Seeks feedback from senior team members for development and effectively incorporates feedback into work and behaviors.
  • Software Solutions - Develop, validate and implement software solutions based on customer requirements, Enterprise architecture standards and defined project designs.
  • Troubleshooting - Solve multiple issues concurrently. Coordinate, delegate, and mentor less experienced staff with issue resolution.


A (minimum) bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, or a related field from an accredited university is required.  Demonstrated software engineering skills and knowledge obtained via professional experience will also be considered in lieu of a degree. 
Typically has 5+ years of related work experience including experience with complex development environments, taking abstract concepts and ideas and formulating a detailed software deliverable.  Mastery of agile development tools and methods is required.
Full-stack development experience and demonstrated ability to build/test/deploy microservices is preferred as is experience with any of the following tools:
  • JavaScript / node.js
  • Docker / Kubernetes
  • AWS, Azure, Goolge Cloud
  • Git
  • Kanban
  • Continuous Integration / Continuous Deployment
  • Test-driven development
