Job Purpose   

Analysts use their keen, pragmatic skills to assess industries, businesses, and products. They are responsible for highlighting gaps and opportunities that support company-building and product roadmap activities from early-stage discovery through entry to market.  

This Senior Business Analyst role at UPMC Enterprises will support a broad initiative to define and deliver new experiences for patients and providers at UPMC's Hospitals of the Future. As such, the ideal candidate that is both a creative futurist and a healthy skeptic. They should bring a deep passion for and fluency in emerging technologies both inside and outside of the healthcare industry. They should work backwards from a customer-centric, business-driven lens. 



  • Understands and surveys emerging technologies and relevant solutions, constantly maintaining and sharing knowledge with other team members 
  • Builds repository of reference knowledge documents, websites, in collaboration with CCM for portfolio and product teams  
  • Performs supporting primary and secondary research to size/segment markets, identify/benchmark offerings with competing solution providers, market forces, opportunity sizing, addressable market, profit drivers, differentiators needed to create strong solutions  
  • Drives problem-scoping, problem definition, problem prioritization within a defined focus area  
  • Maps competitive landscape of products and players that address prioritized problems; identifies opportunities for technology, design, business model innovation  
  • Develops perspectives on value proposition and proposed investment, partnership models in strategic focus areas 
  • Creates, maintains, and continuously improves ability to report on performance metrics for the organization – understanding UPMC's core strengths, gaps and programs 
  • Supports manager to engage internal/external stakeholders and SMEs to understand capabilities and assets within strategic focus areas, and to assess the operational and functional requirements of an organization 
  • Supports synthesis of insights and communication to Product Management leadership and product team as needed  
  • Continuously improves business intelligence 
  • Builds relationships with clinical/administrative champions (UPMC, UPMC Health Plan, etc.) 
  • Supports coaching and development of other team members ad hoc on business development skillset 
  • Performs all above in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors 
  • Performs special projects and other duties as assigned 


  • Master's degree in Management, Business Administration, Health Services Administration, public health or a quantitative field of study (i.e., mathematics, physics, economics, sciences, finance, etc.)
  • 3-5 years relevant experience or B.S. degree in quantitative field of study with a minimum of 2-3 years relevant experience in business development, strategy, marketing or finance 
  • Specific content knowledge (e.g., commercial health care IT products, vendors, precision medicine products, vendors, provider/payor operations) preferred 
  • Experience in consulting, design, computer science, investment banking, venture capital, industry corporate or competitive strategy, medical device, pharma, health care IT product management and strategy welcomed
  • Understanding of health care IT 
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills 
  • Excellent problem solving and critical thinking skills
  • Excellent organizational and analytical skills with strong technical abilities
