At UPMC Enterprises, the Program Manager is responsible for developing, defining, and executing project plans, schedules, budgets, and deliverables. The primary role of this position is to work with the management team, software engineers, design team, analysts, quality assurance, and third party partners, including university investigators and supporting staff, to define, coordinate and facilitate the development of innovative health care technology products . Activities include collaborating and coordinating the efforts of software development and delivery, collecting requirements, design work, creating documentation, managing alpha and beta rollouts, operational readiness and deploying a working system. The Program Manager will also manage resourcing, keeping tabs on in-flight projects, and ensuring players are distributed appropriately to meet the collective needs of the domain and university parties.


  • Manage multiple projects and timelines within multiple industry domains and across one or more university and other external partners
  • Lead cross-functional teams, will have matrix interactions of university investigators, clinicians, business champions, external project manager, engineers, designers, product analysts, quality analysts and/or others as needed 
  • Interface and coordinate activities of centers and supporting staff at partner universities to manage project identification, evaluation, selection and launch
  • Responsible for developing, defining, monitoring, executing, and adhering to project plans, schedules, budgets, and deliverables. Drive the successful estimation, planning, and execution of high quality product development projects on budget and on time 
  • Work with Research & Development and Product Management Teams on a consistent basis providing status updates, recommendations for improvements, and other inputs to provide a world class engineering development organization
  • Manage the development, evaluation and approval of legal and finance-related deliverables for each project
  • Communicate activities, statuses andaccomplishments for each project within the program
  • Manage the development of commercialization plans for university projects and communicate plans to senior leadership when appropriate.
  • Interface with peers throughout UPMC to develop a strong working relationship between all groups within UPMC and the UPMC Enterprises.  Seek opportunity to provide assistance and wherever possible thereby increasing overall service and reducing cost through elimination of duplicate/redundant efforts 
  • Develop and maintain detailed project plans for enterprise initiatives. Schedule and lead project status meetings with the team members and development partners to assess progress and plan activities aimed at keeping the project on-schedule 
  • Develop innovative initiatives that improve the processes and expand and/or deepen the impact of the program in concert with university partners
  • Handles stakeholder management for all internal and external stakeholders
  • Manage and mitigate risks. Establish escalation processes and ensure timely reporting and resolution of issues.  Inform core team, stakeholders, and senior management of major issues that will impact project success.  Work with senior management to resolve major issues that cannot be solved by the project team alone 
  • Create and develop a team environment, including building collaborative relationships, training peers to perform at maximum efficiency and for cross-functional coalitions to ensure knowledge is shared across teams 
  • Participate in defining and implementing the process roadmap and project management best practices to boost productivity, quality and efficiency 
  • Develops key metrics and KPIs to measure overall performance
  • Maintain current industry knowledge and trends, attending educational events and participates in committee work as appropriate 


  • Bachelor's degree in business administration or related field
  • MS or PhD preferred
  • Preclinical academic research experience preferred
  • Grant writing and peer review experience strongly preferred
  • PMP certification preferred
  • 5+ years of experience in managing multiple concurrent software development projects, projects of a large scale and a high level of complexity. Commercial software experience preferred
  • Demonstrated management, problem solving, organizational, negotiation and communication skills (oral and written)
  • Possess a deep knowledge of software development processes, lifecycles, and best practices
  • Demonstrated experience in entrepreneurial activities such as investment pitching, customer discovery, validated learning and business plan developmentDemonstrated ability to motivate and manage teams to meet aggressive deadlines
  • Demonstrated expertise in Project and Program Management, including project planning, driving operating and communication mechanisms
  • High level of comfort presenting information to C-level executive management teams
  • Demonstrated experience in Project Portfolio Management coordinating and delivering complex multi-site projects
  • Demonstrated experience managing matrix reports, cross-functional teams including team members from multiple business units and different operational departments
  • Proven ability to make and meet commitments under pressure
