Research Scientist-Therapeutic Tumor Microenvironment Strategies, NewCo2

Under the direction from the Program Coordinator, the candidate applies his/her technical expertise in the field of cellular and molecular immunology and cancer biology.  This candidate will be working for Therapeutic Tumor Microenvironment Strategies NewCo2, a UPMC Enterprises funded biotech startup.

Responsibilities:
  • As needed, supports the development and validation of new technologies for molecular, cellular and metabolic characterization of samples
  • Contributes to the profiling and validation of novel druggable immunotherapy targets
  • Efficiently and independently initiates, designs, completes, troubleshoots and interprets accurately routine and non-routine lab procedures and assays for molecular, cellular and metabolic characterization of relevant samples from mouse models of cancer and human clinical cancer tissue
  • Must be willing to work flexible hours as necessary, and work beyond 40hrs is likely to be required
  • Reports to the Program Coordinator to ensure they are meeting the goals of TTMS and pursuing the most promising targets within the tumor microenvironment for the development of therapeutics
  • Supports the development of immunological assays to investigate mechanisms of immune-mediated effects of novel identified targets
  • Takes initiative to perform literature searches, stay abreast of literature and as needed, propose, evaluate and implement new technologies
  • This includes the conduct of relevant exploratory experiments and control experiments, applying basic scientific principles

Qualifications

  •        Master’s Degree (MS) from an accredited institution with 3+ years of experience in immunology or a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution with 6+ years of experience in immunology

    ·       Strong and direct prior experience with several of the following relevant techniques:

    o   Cellular and/or molecular immunology or oncology Microscopy and cellular characterization of samples (incl. quantitative imaging methods)

    o   Flow cytometry and cell sorting Molecular biology techniques (e.g., PCR, development of genetic constructs, cloning, etc.) NGS (WGS, WES or RNAseq, including preparation of genomic libraries) CRISPR or other advanced genetic editing techniques

    o   Use of mouse cancer models Processing and characterization of fresh human tumor samples Cell-based metabolic assays

    o   Ability to propose new experimental designs, plan and conduct laboratory experiments, and evaluate and interpret data

    o   Fundamental understanding of the process of discovery and development of immunology-based therapeutic targets and possible novel therapeutic concepts

    o   Critical thinking e.g. by proposing and implementing novel experimental approaches and concepts contributing to the cancer immunology and immune therapy research goals

    o   Product and goal oriented, focused on a career in biotech.

    o   Highly efficient and organized and have a demonstrated ability to adhere to and follow defined timelines, milestone, and objectives
